Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
