Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
