A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
