No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
