Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion offered a chance for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
