Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
